Description
The empleita (strip of plaited palm leaves) was traditionally used to make cheese. To close it, it has a tomiza, which is a rope or cord made of material from the Canarian palm tree. Once woven, the empleita is very resistent and can be washed as much as necessary. It can be reused over and over again until it is completely worn out. María Hernández used several tools to make this traditional Canarian empleita such as a wooden needle to sew it, an iron needle for the tomizas (palm rope), a small needle to prepare the palm leaves, a knife and scissors and of course her hands as the traditional craft is handmade.
