Pannier

Round pannier or esportón made with green palm leaves. This piece was tradtionally used to store the harvest that was gathered from the fields. It’s shape is wider at the bottom and gets narrower towards the top. It can be costum-made in various sizes. The pannier in the picture is a small size. It is particularly useful for storing food, objects or clothes and gives a rustic thouch to the space you put it in.

Traditional and unique piece.

Description

A pannier, traditionally called esportón, capacho or serón is a large container or basket that was formerly used for harvesting or storing grain, wheat, barley, millet or maize… To sew it, the artisan used palm rope. María Hernández also used several tools to make this Canarian palm pannier, such as a wooden needle to sew the plaited palm leaves, an iron needle for the tomizas (palm rope), a small needle to prepare the palm leaves, a knife and scissors and of course her hands, as the traditional craft is handmade.
