Description

In the past, these type of mats were used to cover the earthen floors of Canarian houses. However, it could also be used for bread when taken out of the oven to cool down, to dry figs, or for small children to sit on so that they would not sit directly on the floor. The materials used for making this  mat, traditionally called estera, are the empleita (a strip of interwoven leaves from the Canarian palm tree); the piquillo to make the seams, and the tomiza (cord or rope made of white palm leaves) used for sewing. María Hernández utilised several tools to make this Canarian palm mat, such as a wooden needle for the plaited palm leaves, an iron needle for the tomizas (palm rope), a small needle to prepare the palm leaves, a knife and scissors and of course her hands, as the traditional craft is handmade.
