About me

Woodcarver - Marcos José began woodcarving in 1992 but for as long as he can remember he has enjoyed painting and drawing. It wasn't until 1995 that he started to devote himself professionally and exclusively to carving and to restoring furniture. The first work orders arrived in the form of Virgin Marys, restoring carvings of saints, of Jesus..., from the Church. Later he went on to restore furniture for old palaces and began to create new works.

His life took a completely new turn when he arrived in Fuerteventura and began to combine carving with photography, another of his passions since the age of seven. Marcos José is a lover of beauty, peace, the quiet life and of nature. He is an extreme recycler and the driving force in his life is to create, whether by painting, carving, making music, sculpting or taking photos. That is how Madera y Mar (Wood and the Sea) came to life. It's a framework reflecting his passion and his objective to leave a positive footprint with his passage through life on this planet. He is involved in projects for reforestation, for plastic recycling, and for raising environmental awareness. His wood work is pure art.

About my work

"I try to make sure that all my work is done with recycled materials; right now I consider my work as minimalistic, naïf, I translate the beauty I see on the island into that language. My carvings are full of the colours of the island, I use acrylic paints, organic varnish, my workshop is made of recycled materials, from floor to roof, and I use solar power".

Among the works of Madera y Mar, you will find sculptures, polychromatic carvings, key hooks, wooden floor lamps… all made with great attention to detail and with special care of the finishes and how the wood is treated.

Fuerteventura

"My work could not exist without the island's influence. The volcanoes, waves, landscapes, I attempt to bring it all together in the least possible number of steps with the attempt to convey the purity that the island of Fuerteventura transmits to me. Turquoises are the island's dominating colours, just as in my creations. Why? Because when I arrived on this island 18 years ago it was these colours that impressed me the most. My work also has to be understood with seeing the influence of surfing that is so present in Fuerteventura”.
