About me

Fashion craftswoman. Gugudoll exists thanks to Carmen González, a dollmaker, dressmaker and fashion designer. Carmen was born in Cadiz, but has lived in Fuerteventura for 20 years. As a small child she already loved seeing and touching anything handmade. She has always liked everything to do with handicrafts, especially sewing. She grew up seeing her grandmother, a professional seamstress, sewing and making all kinds of garments. Her mother and uncle also sewed, so you could say it’s in her blood. She was raised among fabrics and remnants, and was capable of creating art from a piece of cloth or wire. She learned by watching them and honed her skills by teaching herself. She began to make little dolls, which she gave to friends and loved ones, who encouraged her to make a living out of it. Although she has been sewing for 20 years, her love of fashion, fabrics and threads led her to give up everything 7 years ago and devote all her time to it, turning her passion into a way of life.

About my work

“My speciality is making all kinds of handmade accessories, toys and children’s clothes, using cotton fabrics. My work is characterized by colour, which is always to the fore in my creations: children’s cushions in the shape of animals, baby clothes, little shoes, dungarees, skirts, fabric nappy pants, cutlery holders, document holders, sandwich holders… And I also make kinds of personalized items to order.” The pieces she makes showcase the work that lies behind the craftsmanship, from the choice of materials to the finished product.

Fuerteventura

“The island has a huge influence on my work. When I arrived here, I started working in hotels but everything around me made me think constantly of creating “bits and pieces” with sewing; it was mainly here in Fuerteventura that I really discovered that this was what I want to do for a living. The calm, peaceful life here helps to inspire me every day.” As well as being a dressmaker, fashion designer and dollmaker, Carmen promotes her craft by teaching creative sewing in EnRedArte.
