About me

Ceramics and painted silk craftswoman - Our ceramist, Andrea Castagna, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1964. She grew up in an artistic environment, sparking her passion for art and handcrafted ceramics; this led her to study later at the Escuela de Cerámica N°1 (Ceramics School No. 1) in Buenos Aires and to take part in numerous workshops, notably with the distinguished artist Ana Perrota in 1982. In 1989 she moved to Madrid where she first began to experiment with painting silk and printing and decorating textiles.

After a brief period of living in London, Andrea moved back to Spain in 1996, but this time to Costa Calma, in the south of Fuerteventura, where she currently has her home-studio, and once she had settled in, she obtained the island’s craftsperson’s card to publicly exhibit her ceramic and painted silk pieces. Since then, she has continued to develop as an artist, craftswoman and teacher in visual expression workshops.

About my work

“My work when creating a ceramic piece or a painting on fabric or paper arises from an idea, a drawing, a text, a colour, a texture. Having chosen the technique (mosaic, modelling in clay, enamel, engobe, illustration, collage, textile printing or printmaking), I begin the creative process by trying to make it as free as possible so as to obtain results imbued with life that convey freshness, whether creating wall or floor tiles, ceramic mosaics, a silk fabric painting on paper or a hand-painted bookmark.” Outstanding among Andrea’s works are creative ceramics and modelling in clay, and in recent years she has focused on mural decoration and glazed floor tiles. Moreover, to finish her works she uses an electric pottery kiln. She also makes pieces to order.

Fuerteventura

“Fuerteventura is my home, the place where I have chosen to live, and it has provided me with a direct daily connection with the sea; my work as a craftswoman has always been linked to water. I am a lover of nature and solitude, and this is a translucent island where both my artistic and my personal life have been enriched.” Andrea Castagna makes her contribution to the island by teaching workshops and courses in creative ceramics so that people can learn the craft from the inside and new practitioners can be formed. She also collaborates with the Island Council of Fuerteventura in the EnRedArte project.
